Adam Sōmu Wojciński is a boundary-breaking teaist, tireless researcher, and visionary artist. Through the prism of the Tea Way, he crafts an influential body of work, seamlessly blending three disciplines: tea mastery, scholarly exploration, and artistic expression.

As a protégé (jikideshi) of the 16th Grand Master of the Ueda Sōko Ryū, Adam has established the first global “shachū”, an official branch of teaists connected through online platforms. His student group spans Europe, Oceania, the Americas, and Asia.

Adam's role in shaping the future of chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) is fuelled by research into the historical foundations of the art. By translating pivotal manuscripts into English, he embodies the idea that authenticity stems from understanding one's past.

In 2022, Adam was appointed to the board of the 暁 (Akatsuki) Junior Council of the Ueda Sōko Ryū, in recognition of his dedication and expertise. In 2021, Adam published "Pearl Among the Clouds," the English translation of 日々ごゆだんなきよう (Japanese title), authored by Ueda Sōkō, the 16th Grand Master of the Ueda Sōkō Ryū.

Currently, Adam is preparing for publication "Learning the Way of Tea with Furuta Oribe”, the English translation of 『茶道長問織答抄』を読む (Japanese title), in collaboration with Kumakura Isao and Ueda Sōkei.

Adam's artistic exploration of tea practice transcends tradition, embracing a contemporary art framework. By challenging the normative practices of the tea ceremony, he liberates the art form from cultural confines, sheds light on its prosaic and political dimensions, and opens chanoyu to wider audiences.

His experimental approach pays homage to the multicultural origins of the tea ceremony. As a polyglot and poly-cultural teaist, Adam advocates for universally relevant tea principles (不易流行 fueki ryūkō), emphasising harmony as the foundation, nature as the subject, practice/realisation as the work, purity as the spirit, no borders as the ethical dimension, and aesthetic expression as the language of tea.

In an era characterised by the erosion of truth and fortification of societal divisions, Adam’s work serves as a poignant reminder of the profound import of sharing a bowl of tea—a transformative act that illuminates compassionate ties between people.

 

Education

  • 2005: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne, with a double-major in Aesthetics and Japanese.

ABSTRACT

上田宗箇流は、武道精神と平和への誓いを融合させた日本の茶道流派です。この講演では、戦国時代末期の桃山時代（1568-1600年）を生きた武将、上田宗箇（1563-1650年）の茶の湯に対する美意識と哲学の根底にあるものについてを考察します。

千利休（1522-1591）と古田織部（1544-1615）に師事した宗箇は、大坂の陣（1615年）の後広島に移り、独自の茶の湯を確立します。それ以来、上田流は広島で茶の湯の伝統を守り続け、原爆投下による絶滅をも間一髪で免れました。本講演は、決して起こってはならない核戦争が身近に迫るこの時代に、武道茶道がどのように平和のためにその遺産を解釈しているのかに焦点を当てます。

模範的な武家茶道の流派として名高い上田流は、生死と隣り合わせだった武士たちの現実を実感させる「お庭焼き」という陶器製の茶道具など、豊かな歴史を持ちます。また際立って美しい特徴的な点前も茶道界では広く知られています。本講演には、家元和風堂で収録した上田流の濃茶および薄茶点前のデモンストレーションが含まれています。 

絶え間なく変化するこの世界で、自己研鑽に重きを置き、門弟各々の自己と世界に対する深い透察の発展を促し支援する、上田宗箇流茶道の理念。そこで得た物事への深い理解により、各個人の人生、さらに人類としての経験、これら両方における平和の推進者が育っていきます。 

 

ENGLISH

The Ueda Sōko Ryū is a Japanese tea ceremony school that combines martial principles and a commitment to peace. This lecture examines the aesthetic sense and philosophical foundations of samurai Ueda Sōko's (1563-1650) way of tea, which originated during the Momoyama period (1568-1600), the final phase of Japan's warring states period. After studying under both Sen Rikyū (1522–1591) and Furuta Oribe (1544–1615), Sōko developed his own unique style of tea after relocating to Hiroshima following the Siege of Osaka (1615). The Ueda school has continued its tradition of chanoyu in Hiroshima ever since and narrowly escaped extinction in the A-bombing of Hiroshima. A central focus of this lecture will be exploring how a martial tea school reinterprets its legacy for peace in an era where nuclear warfare, though untenable, ominously persists.

The Ueda school is renowned as an exemplary warrior-class chanoyu school. It has a rich history of creating "oniwayaki" ceramic tea utensils that embody the life-and-death reality of the samurai. The Ueda Ryū is widely recognised in the tea community for its exceptionally beautiful tea preparation techniques (temae). Adam’s presentation includes demonstrations of the procedures for preparing both thick tea (koicha) and thin tea (usucha) in the Ueda style recorded at the home of the Ueda Ryū, Wafūdō.

In this lecture, Adam will present the idea that the Ueda Sōko Ryū tea ceremony school, which values personal excellence in a constantly changing world, helps students develop a deep understanding of themselves and the world. This understanding transforms individuals into peace promoters in both their personal lives and the wider human experience.
